“Winning ways in the Wynche”…
The final group game of the Archie Wynche Challenge cup saw Wyddn travel all but 200 metres from their home pitch to face an inform Egerton Arms team.
The game oozed Sunday league quality until Ben Catterall calved open Egerton’s high defensive line with a perfectly weighted ball resulting in Jed Murphy calmly slotting past the keeper to break the deadlock. As the game approach the half time whistle, Egerton had the bit between their teeth searching for the equaliser – and it came soon after when Dom Holt miscued a clearance straight into the Wyddn’s own side netting. 1-1.
With the team’s level at half time, the second half was all to play for. Not long into the half, Jed Murphy was hacked down in the opposition penalty area. A penalty to Wyddn – with no real penalty taker on the pitch, up stepped the Skipper Tom Jones. A poised Jones sent the keeper for a hot dog and a packet of crisps as the ball sailed in the corner of the net. A third goal soon followed, again down the left side as Jed Murphy beat his man, squared the ball across the goal to George Gill, who toe poked it home in ‘David Nugent-esque’ fashion. Egerton got a goal back to result in a nervy last 10 mins. But incredible defensive displays from Tom Edwards, Joe Jones and saves from Paddy Gill, nulled their threat.
The full-time whistle blew to a relieved Wyddn team, a great win all round and a good stepping stone to end the season strongly
