Wyddn storm on in the rain…
The stage was set for another classic tussle as a new look Salford Vics, now playing as D & P United hosted Wyddn in a pre season friendly.
Wyddn lined up with a bare 11 and a back 5 that hat not played together before and the pressure was piled on them from the off, however the back line defended well and thwarted any real attack on goal. As the half went on, Wyddn created their own chances, Jed Murphy just dragging wide after a nice counter attacking move. Right on the stroke of half time the deadlock was broken as D&P whipped in a corner only for it to take an unfortunate deflection off Tom Jones and past Cam Freeman in goal. D&P 1-0.
The second saw early chances for Wyddn and one of which was slotted home by Tom Jones in the same corner, this time for the correct team!
Wyddn worked tirelessly and still the back 5 wouldn’t be beat. In another classic counter attack led to Jed Murphy rounding the keeper and slotted home after Joe Jones cooly split the lines. D&P we’re then awarded a soft penalty with a chance to level the scores. As storm Franklin battered down with rain, the sun was shining on goalie Cam Freeman who palmed the spot kick away and keeping the Wyddn lead. Amazing scenes!
More pressure followed from D&P, but every attack nullified by the brick wall centre back trio of Tom Edwards, Paddy Gill and Nathan Knowles. The game was put to bed after another counter attack move saw Jed Murphy rifle home to secure the win 5 minutes from time. As storm Franklin continued to soak down, it was D&P manager Adam Franks left to soak up defeat.
In a result reminiscent of the glory at Melksham, Wyddn mean business this season. Their pre season for sees them unbeaten in 3, whilst only conceding 2 goals – I’d suggest that is Margaret Piggot winning form!
